Aec Excellence Awards 2019

Having been named finalist at the AEC Excellence Awards 2019 in the previous months for the Istanbul Rail System Design Services and Ümraniye-Ataşehir-Göztepe Metro projects, Yüksel Proje has been announced as winner of the grand prize for both projects where BIM was used.

At the AEC Excellence Awards, this was a first for Turkey. For the first time, 2 projects and a Turkish company performing both projects, has been awarded the Grand Prize.

Yüksel Proje participated in the AEC Excellence Awards with the Istanbul Rail System Design Services Project under the Infrastructure Design – Medium Project category and with the Ümraniye-Ataşehir-Göztepe Metro Project under the Infrastructure Design – Large Project category.

Now in its 8th year, the AEC Excellence Awards is known to be as one of the world’s most prestigious sectoral competitions. Global projects from all over the world using BIM and new/innovative technologies in the fields of Architecture, Engineering, and Construction are showcased under the categories of Infrastructure Design, Building Design, and Construction. Criteria’s such as difficulty, innovation, sustainability and the use of technology are taken into consideration during the evaluation phase of the projects.

The Umraniye-Atasehir-Goztepe Metro Project, whose construction works are carried out by Gülermak Nurol Makyol partnership, is a project where the data collected from drones and the surveying equipment are merged, and thus, the location is precisely matched. With a length of 13 km and 11 stations, and the stations being located within heavily populated areas of the city, the planning works were quite complicated.

The structure of metro stations was visualized using 3D coordination, clash detection, project evaluation and 4D phase planning. By creating a BIM model of the entire project, collaboration between teams devoted to tasks such as design, planning and cost control was made much easier.

The first phase of the Istanbul Rail System Project, which is run by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Rail Systems Project Directorate and is a very challenging project due to 5 existing metro line connections.  The project is 16 km long and consists of 11 stations. During the project preparation phase, an integrated BIM platform was created and various disciplines were united under one roof. These studies will give guidance to the other phases of the project and stands out as an example of effective coordination.
